Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades somewhat fleshy, with leaf–opposed tendrils. Margins dentate. Palmately veined. Petiolate. Stipules present.

Flowers: Flowers in leaf opposed, umbellate cymes. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx indistinctly 4-lobed subtruncate. Corolla of 4 distinct petals, apex hooded. Stamens 4, opposite the petals; filaments distinct, slender; anthers dithecal, introrse, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, 2-celled, sometimes incompletely so; ovules 2 per cell; style 1; stigma small.

Fruit: Berries globose or obovoid. Seeds 1(2).
